Purpose

The purpose of Michigan State University’s (MSU) Supporting Women In Geography (SWIG) is to support women within the discipline of Geography by helping to empower them to pursue academic and/or professional careers in Geography. Through training, career development, and other resources, SWIG will also provide a forum for women and supporters of women in Geography to come together for intellectual, professional, and personal support. The organization will not discriminate on the basis of age, color, gender, gender identity, disability status, height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, or weight.

History

Michigan State University’s chapter of Supporting Women in Geography (SWIG) began as a meeting between Dr. Raechel Portelli (SWIG’s first faculty advisor) and graduate students Laura Johnson, Cadi Fung, Libbey Kutch, and Fatima Barry, and has grown to include both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as Geography faculty and staff members. Founded in 2015, MSU SWIG was established as an inclusive space to provide support for geographers of all backgrounds to work on professional development and networking, and to give back to the Greater Lansing community through outreach. Since its founding, SWIG has participated in MSU’s Girls’ Math and Science Day, the MSU Science Festival, and has partnered with MSU’s Geography Club to work with students at Hiawatha Elementary School in Okemos, MI. MSU SWIG has also organized networking breakfasts with guest speakers and visitors, participated in conference panels at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers (AAG), and worked with SWIG chapters across the country to discuss the future of the organization.go here.
